The KontinuumLAB workshops

The KontinuumLAB Workshops are based on a simple premise:

“Anyone Can Make Instruments”.

The “KontinuumLAB Instrument Kit” (K.L.I.K) makes it possible for even complete beginners to make some really impressive electronic musical instruments. Kids, teens, adults, anyone can participate at their own level. The instruments can be put together with very basic tools and materials, but the end result is fully functional, a real instrument, with touch sensitive keys, breath sensors etc.

These workshops are an excellent way to introduce S.T.E.A.M. concepts to the classroom, suitable from 4th grade and up, and excellent for high schoolers and beyond.

In a single session of a couple of hours we can cover many interesting and important topics, all while building, calibrating and playing a series of electronic musical instruments. The selection includes keyboards, string instruments, percussion and wind instruments. The students come away with a deeper understanding, not just of the technologies involved, but also of the instruments we emulate.

Over several sessions we can dig deeper, learning more about the electronics and how the sensors work, as well as basic programming concepts. We can also develop each instrument further, going past the simple materials to personalize each creation, and make the instruments prettier, better, more durable.

Comments:

(Escola Nadal de Sant Feliu de Llobregat - 4th grade. 9-10 y/o):

“It was really impactful. These kids have done some activities with “WEDO” (LEGO robotics kit)... But they had never related it to music and that surprised and excited them. They enjoyed getting to work with a material as basic as cardboard. They thought that was incredible - And that the instruments actually worked. Working in groups and collaborating as a team was also a challenge. They were quite successful”

(Institut Baix Montseny, Sant Celoni - 1o de ESO. 12-13 y/o):

“I really liked the project developed by KontinuumLAB. The students made their instruments, and tried playing them. Fantastic!. They were very excited.”
